As you may already know, I threw an Old MacDonald Had a Farm birthday party for Julia. I decided to make most of the decorations for the party myself, so I brainstormed a list of farm themed decorations. When I picture a farm, I see a white picket fence. It turns out that popsicle sticks are perfect for making white picket fences.
I decided to make table centerpieces and a cake pop display with the popsicle sticks.
I will start with the table centerpieces. First, I gathered my supplies:
- Boxes (I used formula boxes)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Popsicle Sticks (I used the larger kind)
- Wire Cutters
- Hot Glue Gun
- White Spray Paint
- Fake Grass (I got mine from Dollar Tree)
- Red Scrapbook Paper
- Farm Printouts
I began by drawing a line going all the way around each box 3 inches up from the bottom. I chose 3 inches because I thought it looked good with the length of popsicle stick I wanted to use. Then I cut the boxes.
Next, I cut the popsicle sticks in half. I was a little worried about doing this, but it turns out there is a very easy way to cut popsicle sticks in half. Mark the center of the popsicle stick. Then use the wire cutters to make an indent on the popsicle stick where you want it cut. Repeat this on the other side so there is an indented line going all the way across the width of the popsicle stick in the center. Then use your fingers to snap the popsicle stick in half.
I found that I usually got a pretty straight and clean break when using this method to cut the popsicle sticks. I believe I only wasted one or two popsicle sticks at the beginning when I was figuring out how to do it.
When you have enough “fence posts”, glue them all the way around the boxes with the hot glue gun.
Then spray paint them white. I used the spray paint that has primer in so I didn’t have to do very many coats.
When the paint is dry, put some fake grass inside the box and glue on the farm printouts. I put a red border around my farm cutouts and put two on each box.
I also made a cake pop display using a popsicle stick picket fence. It was very easy to make.
The materials I used to make the cake pop display include:
- Styrofoam Block (From Michael’s)
- Popsicle Sticks (I used the larger kind)
- Wire Cutters
- Hot Glue Gun
- White Spray Paint
- Fake Grass (I got mine from Dollar Tree)
Using the same method as above, cut the popsicle sticks in half with the wire cutters. Then use the hot glue gun to glue the popsicle sticks all the way around the Styrofoam block.
Then paint the display with the white spray paint.
When it is dry, add some fake grass.
When it is time for the party, add the cake pops!
