I love decorating with big letters. Instead of using paper mache letters like I did for these letters, I decided to make my own using cereal boxes and duct tape. Any boxes would probably work, but I used cereal boxes because I eat a LOT of cereal and had plenty of boxes leftover.
Since I am not an artist, I used Microsoft Word to make some templates. At first I tried to type the letters and use the largest font size, but the letters weren’t big enough. I ended up inserting shapes to form the letters I needed, which were O, N, and E.
When the letters looked good to me, I printed and cut them out.
I traced each letter on the cereal box twice, so I would have two cutouts of each letter. One of the letters will be the front, one will be the back, and they will be connected with other strips. I cut the cereal box strips 1 ½ inches wide because that is how thick I wanted my letters to be.
I traced and cut the letters so the brown part of the cereal box would be on the outside. That is why one of the N’s in the picture above is backwards. That might not be necessary, but I wanted to make sure the design on the cereal box didn’t show through.
When taping the letters together, I found that it worked best to tape the 1 ½ inch strips to all of the edges of one letter first. I also used several shorter strips that were no longer than each edge of the letter I was taping it to.
When there was a 1 ½ inch cereal box strip taped to each edge, I taped the strips together. This is when it started to take on the proper shape. Up until this point, it was flat.
At this point, the letter was pretty secure, but the next step was to tape the second letter to the other side.
Then repeat this process for each letter you want.
Finally time to decorate! I decided to wrap my letters with burlap ribbon, but there are many different ways to decorate them. I will be using them as decorations for my baby’s first birthday party.
Overall, this was a pretty easy project. The only cost was for the ribbon since I already had duct tape and a bunch of cereal boxes.
Have you done anything crafty with your cereal boxes?
Have a great day!
