It seems like every time I buy a new piece of furniture, it comes with a few extra pieces that I may need in the future. While it’s unlikely that I will ever actually need those pieces, I still want to be able to find them in the future if I do actually end up needing them because it would make my life a lot easier. Today I am going to share my method for storing spare parts.
My method isn’t fancy, but it is easy to set up and maintain. This makes it a great system in my mind!
The supplies I used include:
- Ziploc Bags
- Masking Tape
- Marker
First, I went through my house and gathered all of the spare parts that I had been storing all over the place. I put all of the spare parts for each item in its own Ziploc bag. Then I used my marker and masking tape to label the bag. I repeated this process for all of my spare parts. That is the whole process. It’s very easy!
While I was going through everything, I took the opportunity to get rid of all of the spare parts that went with items I no longer had. There is no point in taking up valuable storage space for those items. I also used a smaller Ziploc bag if everything would fit in order to save space. Some items with bigger spare parts required a larger bag though.
I decided to use a different Ziploc bag to store the spare parts for each item because I didn’t want to have any confusion later. Sometimes I felt like I was wasting bags when I put only one tiny spare part in a bag by itself, but I think it is worth it to have a consistent system.
In the end, everything fit conveniently into one canvas storage cube. I store all of my user manuals separately. If you are interested, I explained how I organize and store my user manuals in this post.
I really like this system for several reasons:
- Easy to Find Spare Parts – I will always know exactly where to find what I need because everything is in one place.
- Easy to See Spare Parts – The bags are clear so it is easy to see everything.
- Easy to Set Up System – I didn’t need many supplies for this project.
- Easy to Maintain System – I just need bags, tape, and a marker. Storing these items in the bin with the spare parts would make this system even easier to maintain.
What do you do with spare parts?
Have a great day!
