I am not claiming to be great at baking. In fact, I have definitely had my share of kitchen disasters. Did you know that if you boil an egg for too long, it will end up on the walls and ceiling? I do. Or did you know that brownies don’t taste very good when you add a cup of salt to the mix? Yeah, I know that too. Even though I am not going to win any baking contests, I do love to make and decorate cupcakes. I made some pretty heart cupcakes using candy melts for decorations .
The supplies I used include:
- Vanilla Box Cake Mix
- Pink Icing (I made my own)
- Pretty Cupcake Liners
- Wilton Decorating Bags
- Star Tip
- Bright White Wilton Candy Melts
- Ziploc Bag
- Wax Paper
First, I baked the cupcakes according to the instructions on the box. I didn’t want to get too crazy here and actually make the mix myself. After they cooled completely, I iced them by using a decorating bag and the star tip. The next part was my favorite part!
I had seen cupcake decorations made out of candy melts, but I had never tried to make them before because I thought they would be really hard to make. I finally decided to try it. I am definitely not an artist, but I figured hearts couldn’t be too hard to draw.
I followed the instructions for heating the candy melts. Just microwave in a bowl at half power for a minute, stir, and continue microwaving for 30 second intervals until smooth and completely melted. Then I spooned that into a Ziploc bag and cut the corner off of the bag.
This allowed me to draw hearts on the wax paper. The melted candy was runny, so I did this step quickly in order to avoid making a huge mess. The first few hearts didn’t really look like hearts, but they got better after a little practice. When the sheet of wax paper was full of candy hearts, I cooled them in the refrigerator for a few minutes.
I didn’t time it, but they weren’t in the refrigerator for very long. I just cleaned up the kitchen and when I checked on them, they easily peeled off of the wax paper.
Here they are on the cupcakes!
I made some solid hearts…
And some heart outlines…
Overall, it was pretty easy to use the candy melts to make the heart cupcake decorations. I will be using candy melts again to decorate in the future.
Here the cupcakes are on a pretty cake stand…
Have you made anything with candy melts?
Have a great day!
